Everyone wants to buy things: an iPhone, a car, a house, a something.
People, who are mastering their life and can buy an iPhone, a car, a house and a something, don’t prioritise buying any of these things.
Their priority is to buy more time.
How do you buy more time?
In business, it’s straightforward: it usually means hiring and delegating (or automating - but this isn’t a post about business, so I’m not going to go into detail).
A year ago I bought more time by hiring a virtual assistant to help me out with a number of ventures.
I bought at least 60 hours’ worth of time and it made my life much easier.
But: how do you buy more time in your personal life?
For some, it could be a case of hiring a cleaner, so they can spend more time with their children.
For example, I never cook. I choose to outsource my cooking by going out. I’m not lazy, I just know how to put those two or three hours to use in a way that means either I enjoy my life more or advance my business (or both).
Buying more time could also mean choosing to pay a little more to get a direct flight or a faster train ticket to a given destination.
You might ask, ‘Well, what if I don’t have money to spare?’
It’s the thinking behind it that matters.
When you are buying time, it is a conscious process, much like investing.
You are seeking a return on your bought time.
The return can be financial in case of outsourcing and getting more done in business.
But it can also be emotional: spending a night or a week with your partner, having an extra day at the beach with your children, or enjoying a quality dinner with your friend.
This is emotional return on your investment.
Sometimes I end up flying to visit my family multiple times in a year and it doesn’t always make sense, but what I’m doing is I’m buying time with my family.
It pays off and the pay-off can only be felt in my heart, not read on a bank statement.
After all, wealth isn’t about the number of zeros in your bank account - far from it.
So, if there’s one commodity that is truly worth buying in life, it’s time.
The scarcest resource there is.
A resource that can’t be recreated or increased.
A resource which you and I are running out of this very moment.
So, how can you become more conscious of your time? And how might you find ways to buy yourself time?
